The Oyo State House of Assembly has approved Governor Seyi Makinde’s request to proceed on his annual leave, with Deputy Governor Adebayo Lawal set to assume responsibility for the administration of the state during the period.
The leave will run from August 10 to September 11, 2026, while the governor is expected to resume work on September 14, 2026.
The approval was granted during Thursday’s plenary after lawmakers considered a formal notification from the governor, submitted in compliance with the Constitution, which requires state governors to inform the legislature before embarking on official leave.
The governor’s letter was presented by the Deputy Speaker, Muhammed Fadeyi, who presided over the session in the absence of Speaker Adebo Ogundoyin.
Following deliberations, members of the Assembly unanimously endorsed the request and expressed confidence that the deputy governor would effectively manage the state’s affairs throughout the governor’s absence, ensuring continuity in governance.
Makinde observed a similar annual leave in 2025 and returned before the coronation of the Olubadan of Ibadan, Oba Rashidi Ladoja, held on September 26, 2025.
