Guyana President Mohamed Irfaan Ali has urged citizens to promote national unity, mutual respect and social harmony as the country marked Emancipation Day.
In his address commemorating the end of slavery, Ali paid tribute to African ancestors who survived the brutality of the transatlantic slave trade and chattel slavery, describing their resilience as a foundation for the nation’s progress.
The president said despite the suffering endured by enslaved Africans, they preserved their dignity, humanity and determination to achieve freedom.
He highlighted the significant role African-Guyanese played in shaping the country after emancipation, particularly through the post-emancipation Village Movement, where freed Africans pooled resources to acquire land and establish independent communities.
Ali described these villages as symbols of strength, cultural preservation and the roots of Guyana’s nationhood.
He noted that the contributions of African-Guyanese have influenced various sectors of society, including agriculture, commerce, resource development, civic engagement and public service.
“Their contributions are the very pillars upon which modern Guyana stands,” the president said, adding that their sacrifices created opportunities for future generations to thrive.
Beyond remembering the past, Ali called on Guyanese to avoid division, discrimination and political hostility, urging citizens to build stronger bonds across social and political differences.
He said the best way to honour the sacrifices of their ancestors was by creating a society based on equality, respect and collective prosperity.
“Let us refuse the temptation of suspicion and the poison of hatred,” Ali stated, encouraging citizens to remain committed to unity and cooperation.
The president also reaffirmed his administration’s dedication to building a free, prosperous and inclusive Guyana where every citizen can benefit from national development.
