The Lagos State Police Command has opened an investigation into allegations that some officers assaulted a gold dealer after a video showing the incident went viral on social media.
The video, shared on X by a user identified as @ChuksEricE, featured the victim claiming he was attacked by policemen in the Festac area of Lagos.
The man said he was on his way to deliver a necklace when the officers stopped and searched him. He alleged that although the search did not reveal any illegal item, the officers found a weighing scale used for his gold business and accused him of using it to measure cannabis.
According to the victim, the officers demanded that he follow them to the station, but he declined, insisting that he had done nothing wrong.
He further alleged that the policemen were not properly dressed in uniforms and arrived in an unregistered vehicle while attempting to force him into their bus. He claimed one of the officers hit him on the head with a gun before other officers allegedly assaulted him.
Responding to the claims, the Lagos Police Command said it had begun investigating the incident after reviewing the viral footage.
In a statement shared on its official X handle, @LagosPoliceNG, the command disclosed that the officers involved are attached to Area E Command.
The police said Commissioner of Police, Fatai Tijani, had instructed the Area Commander to immediately present the officers at the command headquarters for investigation and possible disciplinary measures.
The command also urged the victim to support the investigation by contacting its Complaint Response Unit (CRU) through 09111111150 or 09111111151.
It assured residents that the matter would be thoroughly examined and that any officer found responsible for misconduct would face appropriate sanctions in line with police regulations and the law.
