Libyan Prime Minister Abdul-Hamid Dbeibah has removed the board of directors of the state-owned General Electricity Company of Libya amid worsening power shortages and load shedding.
Mr Dbeibah also appointed a new board headed by Bashir al-Maraash to lead the company and address the country’s persistent electricity supply challenges.
The new board assumed duties after being reconstituted under a decision approved by the company’s general assembly at its first ordinary meeting of 2026, Libya Alahrar reported.
The development comes as Libya faces repeated partial and total power grid collapses, resulting in widespread electricity outages across the country.
The new board is expected to focus on stabilising the power grid, improving power generation, transmission and distribution efficiency, and accelerating maintenance work.
It is also expected to implement projects aimed at developing Libya’s electricity sector and addressing persistent power supply challenges.
