The police on Tuesday arraigned a 23-year-old man, Bello Abubakar, before an Ado-Ekiti Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing sports kits valued at N80,000.
The defendant, of no fixed address, is standing trial on a two-count charge of stealing and breach of the peace.
The prosecutor, Inspector Olubu Apata, told the court that the defendant committed the offences on September 5 at about 10.30 a.m. at the Stadium Complex area, Ado-Ekiti.
He alleged that the defendant stole a school bag, canvas shoes, a boxing belt and sports playing pants valued at N80,000, belonging to the complainant, Adedeji Abdulsamad.
Mr Apata also alleged that the defendant conducted himself in a manner likely to cause a breach of the peace.
He said the offences contravened Sections 302 and 181(1)(d) of the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
The prosecutor asked the court for an adjournment to enable him to study the case file and present his witnesses.
The defendant, who had no legal representation, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
In her ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Taiwo Ajibade, granted the defendant bail in the sum of N10,000, with one surety in like sum.
She adjourned the case until September 18 for hearing.
