Why I Distributed Cash to Constituents, By Sen. Akpoti-Uduaghan

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has defended her decision to distribute millions of naira in cash to constituents during an empowerment programme in Kogi Central Senatorial District.

The lawmaker said the decision was informed by the preference of some beneficiaries for direct financial assistance rather than business equipment.

Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan, who represents Kogi Central, explained that previous empowerment programmes showed that some beneficiaries often sold equipment given to them to meet other business needs.

She made the clarification in a statement issued by her media aide, Mike Idoko, on Wednesday, amid criticism of the cash empowerment programme organised to mark her third anniversary in office.

Explaining the rationale before the distribution of the grants, the senator said some beneficiaries needed cash to start businesses, expand existing ones or replenish their stock.

“I have given out sewing machines to many, and at the end of the day, I realised they sold them to either boost their businesses or pay rent.

“So I have decided to give cash to those who requested support to start a business or add more stock. There are also those who will get N5m through transfer,” she said.

The senator said entrepreneurs had different business needs and operational challenges, making direct financial assistance a practical option for supporting their activities. She added that the intervention was part of efforts to strengthen small businesses and improve economic opportunities across the senatorial district.

In her anniversary message, Mrs Akpoti-Uduaghan expressed gratitude to God for the opportunity to serve, saying the grants were targeted at supporting local entrepreneurs across different sectors.

“We rounded off our third anniversary in office by supporting small businesses across Kogi Central with cash grants.

“From farmers and tailors to content creators and small-scale manufacturers, these entrepreneurs are building livelihoods and strengthening our local economy.

“Thus, I’m grateful to God and honoured to support local businesses with the financial assistance they need to grow,” she said.
