The governorship campaign organisation of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Nasarawa State has faulted the attempt by the state government to link its 2027 governorship candidate, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, and former Governor, Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, to the disruption that marred Vice President Kashim Shettima’s visit to Lafia for the presidential campaign rally of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
The campaign organisation was reacting to a statement credited to the Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Labaran Shuaibu Magaji, SAN, which directed the Department of State Services (DSS) to investigate the incident and alleged that the suspects were linked to high-profile personalities.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, High Chief Douglas Otaru, the SDP campaign described the allegation as irresponsible and an act of political cowardice and mischief.
“We wish to state in unequivocal terms that the attempt by the Nasarawa State Government to link the Social Democratic Party (SDP) gubernatorial candidate for the 2027 general elections, Mohammed Abubakar Adamu, a former Inspector-General of Police, and former Governor, Senator Umaru Tanko Al-Makura, to the purported incident that marred the visit of the Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima, to Lafia today is not only irresponsible but a clear act of political cowardice and mischief,” Otaru said.
He said the Nasarawa State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) ignored early warning signals and is now “seeing wonders from its own members.”
“No matter how powerful government claims to be, it derives its authority and legitimacy from the people. You cannot attempt to subvert the will of the people and expect the will of government to prevail,” he added.
Otaru said the campaign organisation would issue a detailed official statement in due course.
