PDP Faction Denies Plans to Endorse Jonathan for 2027 Presidential Ticket, Calls Report False, Misleading

A faction within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has denied reports claiming it intended to organise a convention to endorse former President Goodluck Jonathan as its 2027 presidential candidate, describing the allegation as baseless, misleading, and unauthorised.

In a statement issued on Friday by the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Jungudo Mohammed, the faction urged security agencies to trace and prosecute those responsible for spreading what it called false information aimed at causing political tension and damaging the party’s image.

The clarification follows reports that a group within the PDP’s Interim National Working Committee, led by Tanimu Turaki, had planned a convention in Abuja scheduled for Saturday, where Jonathan was allegedly to be formally adopted as the party’s flag bearer for the 2027 general election.

It would be recalled that Senator Sandy Onor was recently screened, cleared, and presented as the PDP’s presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 polls.

Reacting to the claims, the PDP insisted that no such convention, meeting, or endorsement process had been approved or recognised by any legitimate organ of the party.

It urged members of the party, stakeholders, and the general public to disregard the reports, stressing that they were fabricated and capable of creating confusion within the political space.

The party further noted that it had already concluded all its primary elections, including governorship, National Assembly, State Assembly, and presidential primaries, in line with INEC regulations, the Electoral Act, and its internal constitution.

According to the statement, these exercises were conducted peacefully across the country under the supervision of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

The PDP also called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to publicly distance himself from the alleged move, saying it was necessary to protect both his reputation and the integrity of the democratic process.

In addition, the party urged security agencies to investigate the origin of the reports and take action against those behind them, alleging that their intention was to destabilise the political environment.

It maintained that it would no longer tolerate attempts to drag the party into disrepute through misinformation or unauthorised political activities, reaffirming its commitment to internal democracy, due process, and the rule of law.
