The Edo State Police Command has confirmed the successful rescue of all thirteen (13) passengers abducted during a violent attack along the Benin–Lagos Road in Ogua Community on May 9, 2026.
The victims, who were travelling in a commercial bus belonging to Young Shall Grow Motors from Akwa Ibom State to Lagos, were attacked by armed kidnappers who opened fire on the vehicle, injuring a female passenger during the incident.
According to the Command, a swift response team was immediately deployed, leading to the rescue of five passengers, comprising two adults and three children, during initial bush-combing operations in the area.
On May 10, 2026, operatives intensified the operation using drones, aerial surveillance, intelligence-led policing, and coordinated tactical deployment. This resulted in a gun duel with the kidnappers and the rescue of two additional victims.
The Command further disclosed that sustained search and pressure on the abductors eventually led to the rescue of the remaining six passengers unhurt, bringing the total number of rescued victims to thirteen.
The Commissioner of Police, Edo State Police Command, CP Monday Agbonika, commended the operatives for their bravery and professionalism, noting that efforts are still ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects and dismantle their criminal network.
He assured residents that the Command remains committed to ensuring safety along highways and will not relent in its anti-kidnapping operations.
