The Ebonyi State Police Command has commenced an investigation into the killing of Chidiebere Okpara, an operative of the state’s Neighbourhood Watch, formerly known as Ebubeagu, who was reportedly attacked and killed by suspected gunmen in Abakaliki.
Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) in Ebonyi, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the incident to journalists on Saturday, saying the attack occurred at Ugwuchara in Abakaliki Local Government Area.
According to Ukandu, the victim was attacked around 8:30 p.m. on Thursday, adding that the command had begun efforts to uncover the circumstances surrounding the killing. He noted that no suspect had been arrested so far.
The police spokesperson assured residents that security operatives were working to track down those behind the attack.
“Investigation has commenced, and we are determined to identify and arrest the perpetrators. We remain committed to protecting the lives and property of citizens,” he said.
A resident who witnessed the incident, speaking anonymously, claimed the operative was ambushed by armed men while carrying out his duty.
The witness alleged that the attackers fired several shots at Okpara, and after he survived the initial gunfire, they reportedly overpowered him and inflicted severe machete injuries before escaping.
The source said the reason for the attack remained unknown, while urging security agencies to intensify efforts to bring the perpetrators to justice.
The police command has yet to announce any arrest in connection with the incident.
