The Nigeria Police Force has commenced an investigation into a viral video allegedly showing some of its officers making offensive ethnic comments and displaying unprofessional conduct during a stop involving a United Kingdom-based motorist on the Lagos-Benin Expressway.
Force spokesperson, Ani Iniedu, disclosed on Saturday that four officers linked to the incident had been identified and taken into custody ahead of an orderly room trial.
The officers, consisting of an Assistant Superintendent of Police (ASP) and three Inspectors, are being investigated over their actions captured in the widely circulated video.
According to Iniedu, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has instructed the Ondo State Commissioner of Police to carry out a thorough and impartial investigation to establish the level of involvement of each officer and recommend appropriate disciplinary measures.
He stressed that the behaviour displayed in the video was inconsistent with the standards and principles of the Nigeria Police Force.
The police spokesperson warned that ethnic profiling, discrimination, and disrespect towards citizens would not be tolerated, adding that officers who violate professional ethics would face necessary sanctions.
“The Nigeria Police Force remains committed to upholding professionalism, fairness, and respect in its engagements with members of the public,” Iniedu stated.
