The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has forecast a mix of sunshine, cloudy skies and thunderstorms across different parts of the country from Sunday through Tuesday.
In its latest weather outlook released in Abuja, the agency said northern states would experience mostly sunny conditions with patches of clouds on Sunday morning. However, thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected in parts of Taraba, Adamawa and Kaduna before extending later in the day to Borno, Bauchi, Gombe, Jigawa, Katsina, Kano, Kaduna, Adamawa and Taraba.
For the North-Central region, NiMet forecast morning thunderstorms and moderate rainfall in parts of Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). By afternoon and evening, similar weather conditions are expected to spread to Kogi, Benue, Plateau, Niger, Nasarawa and the FCT.
In the South, moderate rainfall is expected in the morning across parts of Ondo, Ogun, Cross River, Akwa Ibom, Rivers, Lagos and Bayelsa, with rainfall likely to become more widespread later in the day.
On Monday, the agency said parts of Zamfara, Sokoto, Kebbi, Adamawa and Taraba could experience morning thunderstorms accompanied by moderate rainfall. As the day progresses, the storms are expected to affect Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Bauchi, Gombe, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Taraba and Adamawa.
The North-Central states of Niger, Kwara and the FCT are also expected to record morning thunderstorms, while moderate rainfall is forecast across the region during the afternoon and evening.
Southern states, including Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom, Lagos and Rivers, are likely to receive light rainfall in the morning, with moderate thunderstorms expected across much of the region later in the day.
For Tuesday, NiMet forecast partly cloudy skies over northern Nigeria, with light morning thunderstorms likely in parts of Bauchi, Jigawa and Yobe. Moderate thunderstorms are expected to become more widespread across the region by afternoon and evening.
The North-Central region is expected to begin the day with sunny intervals and patches of cloud before moderate thunderstorms develop later across the area.
In the South, cloudy conditions are expected in the morning, with light rainfall forecast for parts of Edo, Cross River, Delta, Bayelsa, Akwa Ibom and Rivers. Thunderstorms with moderate rainfall are expected across the region later in the day.
NiMet advised residents to take precautions against strong winds that may accompany thunderstorms by securing loose objects around homes and businesses.
The agency also warned that persistent rainfall along the coastal states could trigger flash floods, urging motorists to avoid driving through flooded roads or during heavy downpours. It further advised residents to unplug electrical appliances during storms and avoid sheltering under tall trees because of the risk of falling branches.
Airline operators were encouraged to obtain airport-specific weather reports from NiMet to support safe flight planning, while members of the public were urged to monitor the agency’s regular weather updates.
