The Osun State Police Command has commenced an investigation into an attack on officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) during the distribution of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) in Odo-Otin Local Government Area.
According to the police, the incident occurred at Oyinlola DC Primary School, Ward 2, where about 10 armed hoodlums reportedly stormed the PVC distribution centre. The assailants allegedly fired gunshots into the air before fleeing with three packs of PVCs.
The command’s spokesperson, Abiodun Ojelabi, disclosed the development in a statement issued on Sunday, noting that the attack has been strongly condemned by the Commissioner of Police, Ibrahim Gotan.
Mr Gotan directed security operatives to identify, arrest and prosecute everyone involved in the incident. He also ordered the deployment of tactical and intelligence teams to track down the suspects and recover the stolen voter cards.
The police assured residents that every effort was being made to bring the perpetrators to justice, while reaffirming the command’s commitment to protecting lives, property and the electoral process through lawful and professional policing.
Residents were advised to remain calm, avoid actions capable of disrupting public peace, and cooperate with security agencies. The command also appealed to anyone with useful information about the attack to report to the nearest police station or use the police emergency lines to aid the ongoing investigation.
