Authorities in the United States have announced cash rewards of up to $50,000 for information that could help identify and apprehend individuals involved in violent crimes, gang activities, illegal firearms and drug trafficking in Washington, D.C.
The U.S. Marshals Service, an agency under the Department of Justice, made the announcement on Friday as part of efforts to improve public safety in the nation’s capital.
According to the agency, members of the public who provide credible information that results in the arrest and prosecution of suspected criminals may qualify for the rewards.
“Help make Washington, D.C., safer,” the agency said, noting that the D.C. Safe and Beautiful Task Force is offering financial incentives for useful tips concerning violent crime, gangs, illegal firearms and drug trafficking.
The rewards vary depending on the nature and usefulness of the information, with eligible informants able to receive $2,500, $10,000 or as much as $50,000.
The Marshals Service also appealed to residents to provide information on wanted fugitives, registered sex offenders, possible threats against federal judges and court facilities, as well as other suspected criminal activities within Washington, D.C.
The agency said accurate and actionable information from the public could assist law enforcement agencies in bringing offenders to justice and making the city safer.
