The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) has declared a force majeure event on the 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi Transmission Line after a transmission tower collapsed along the corridor.
In a statement issued on Tuesday, the company said “the transmission line tripped at 10:44 p.m. on Monday, September 7, 2026. According to TCN, a trial reclosure was attempted at 11:07 p.m., but the line tripped again.”
“Following the second trip, linesmen from the TCN Birnin Kebbi Sub-Region commenced a fault-finding patrol along the transmission corridor to identify the cause of the outage. The team, on September 8, discovered that Tower T367 had collapsed.”
TCN said “preliminary findings indicated that the tower was brought down by heavy winds and rainstorms experienced in the area.”
“The incident has affected the transmission of bulk electricity through the 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi transmission corridor. Consequently, TCN said it had invoked Force Majeure on the affected 330kV Kainji–Birnin Kebbi Transmission Line, designated 2KNJ–BRK1, due to the natural disaster that caused the damage.”
The company said arrangements were already underway to mobilise personnel and equipment for rehabilitation.
“TCN has commenced arrangements to mobilise the necessary personnel, equipment, and other resources to the affected location to facilitate the rehabilitation of the collapsed tower and restoration of the transmission line to service within the shortest possible time,” the statement said.
Despite the incident, the company said it had successfully maintained electricity transmission to Sokoto through an alternative route.
According to TCN, “the Talata Mafara–Sokoto corridor is currently receiving supply through an alternative transmission path from the Kaduna-Mando axis via the 132kV Zaria–Funtua–Gusau transmission line.”
The company assured electricity consumers and other stakeholders affected by the incident that it was taking steps to restore normal bulk power transmission as quickly as possible.
TCN apologised for the inconvenience caused by the development, while assuring the public that every effort was being made to rehabilitate the damaged infrastructure and restore the affected transmission line.
