Latest Killing of Two Compatriots in S’Africa Senseless, Unacceptable: Nigerian Union

The Nigerian Union in South Africa has condemned the killing of two Nigerians amid worsening anti-immigration and xenophobic attacks in South Africa.

‎Taiwo Fakunle and James Nwankwo were murdered on September 4 and 5 respectively. While Mr Nwankwo was killed by officers of the South African Police Service in Somerset West, Cape Town, Mr Fakunle was murdered at his residence in Kensington, Johannesburg.

‎In a statement on Friday signed by its national publicity secretary Akindele Olulonyo, the union described the incidents as unacceptable and senseless.
‎
‎“It is with deep sorrow and outrage that we condemn the recent killings of two Nigerian nationals in South Africa. These senseless acts of violence are unacceptable and underscore the urgent need for enhanced safety measures and justice for members of the Nigerian community,” the union stated.

‎The union demanded a thorough investigation into the incidents and urged the South African authorities to bring perpetrators to justice.
‎
‎Expressing its commitment to the safety of Nigerians in the country, the union appreciated the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) for contributing 500 one-way tickets to facilitate voluntary repatriation of Nigerians back home.
‎
‎“This benevolent gesture, made possible through the approval of the General Overseer of the Church, is a timely and significant contribution that will provide support to many vulnerable Nigerians who have faced challenges while living abroad. We commend the RCCG for its unwavering commitment to the dignity and welfare of Nigerians in the diaspora,” the union added.

‎It further acknowledged the decision of the National Assembly to suspend official visits to South Africa and boycot South Africa-hosted legislative activities.
‎
‎According to the union, the decision underscores the seriousness with which the Nigerian government views the ongoing xenophobic attacks and other forms of hostility directed at Nigerians and other African nationals in South Africa.

‎“The Nigerian Union stands in solidarity with the National Assembly’s efforts to protect the dignity, safety and rights of Nigerians abroad,” the statement added.

‎The union urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and law-abiding, calling on interested nationals to take advantage of the ongoing repatriation screening while adhering to guidelines provided by the relevant authorities.

‎
