A 23-year-old man, Michael Gbadero, stood before an Abeokuta Magistrates’ Court in Isabo on Monday, accused of stealing iron rods worth N460,000.
The defendant, whose address was not provided, is on trial on two charges: stealing and malicious damage to property.
He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.
The prosecutor, Opeyemi Lawal, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on October 14, at about 2:00 p.m., at Banana Estate in Kemta Idi-Aba, Abeokuta.
Mr Lawal alleged that the defendant unlawfully entered the premises of complainant Tunde Kehinde and stole iron rods used to fence his house.
He alleged that the defendant also damaged the concrete poles while removing the iron rods.
According to him, the defendant was caught by neighbours who alerted the complainant, who consequently reported the case to the police.
The offences contravene sections 390(9) and 451 of the Criminal Law of Ogun, 2006.
The magistrate, O. T. Odubanjo, granted the defendant bail of N250,000 with one surety in like sum. She held that the surety must be a registered bondsman with the Ogun State Judiciary.
The court also ordered that the defendant be remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre pending perfection of his bail conditions.
She adjourned the case until November 3 for hearing.
