In this exclusive interview with Cecilia Ogezi, Tunde Akinsanmi’s popularly known as Tunde Styl-Plus throws light on reinvention through soul, authenticity and timeless sound in the ever growing and dynamic R n B genre in the music industry
For many Nigerian music lovers, the name Styl-Plus evokes memories of heartfelt ballads, rich harmonies, and timeless love songs that defined an era in contemporary R&B. Today, one-third of that iconic group, Tunde Akinsanmi, is carving a new artistic identity as a solo act embracing reinvention while preserving the emotional depth that made fans fall in love with his music years ago.
Since stepping into the spotlight alone, Tunde says the transition has been both liberating and transformative, offering him room to explore dimensions of creativity that were once shared within a collective framework.
“It’s been exciting and deeply fulfilling,” he said. “Going solo has given me the opportunity to express myself more personally and explore different sides of my creativity. It’s been a journey of growth, discovery, and reconnecting with my passion for music.”
For an artist whose career was built on collaboration and harmony, the shift from group dynamics to individual artistry came with significant adjustments. According to him, one of the greatest differences lies in responsibility and creative ownership.
“In a group, you benefit from shared ideas and energy. As a solo artist, every decision rests on you,” he explained. “It comes with more responsibility, but it also allows me to fully shape my vision and tell my story exactly the way I want.”
That freedom, he noted, has become one of the most rewarding aspects of his solo evolution. Away from the structure of a group setting, Tunde has embraced experimentation and artistic risk-taking, allowing his audience to encounter a more personal version of him.
Fans, he said, are now seeing more than just the vocalist they knew from the Styl-Plus years.
“They’re getting a deeper look into who I am not just as a singer, but also as a songwriter and producer,” he stated.
Describing his current sound in three words — “soulful, authentic, timeless” — the singer maintains that his music remains rooted in emotional honesty and human connection. Drawing inspiration from life experiences, family, love, and personal reflection, he believes music should resonate beyond entertainment.
“Life itself inspires me,” he said. “I also draw inspiration from the desire to create music that truly connects with people.”
Despite years in the industry, Tunde insists his motivation remains unchanged: the emotional impact music can have on listeners.
“The love for music and the impact it has on people is what keeps me going,” he noted. “Knowing that a song can touch someone’s heart is everything.”
As digital platforms continue to redefine artist-fan relationships, Tunde says authenticity remains central to how he engages his audience. Through live performances and social media interactions, he strives to maintain a genuine connection with supporters who have followed his journey from the early Styl-Plus era to his present reinvention.
“I always appreciate the people who have supported me over the years,” he said.
Reflecting on lessons carried from his group days, the singer emphasized teamwork, consistency, patience, and respect for the creative process as enduring values that continue to shape his approach to music.
Beyond the glamour of the entertainment industry, Tunde revealed that staying grounded has become increasingly important.
Outside music, he prioritizes family time, reflection, and simple moments that help him recharge creatively and mentally.
In an industry often driven by trends and reinvention, Tunde believes evolution is essential for artistic longevity.
“Growth keeps the music honest and allows me to remain relevant while staying true to myself,” he explained.
That philosophy appears to be influencing his forthcoming projects. While keeping details under wraps, the singer confirmed that fans should expect fresh music and creative collaborations in the near future.
According to him, the upcoming body of work will blend nostalgia with innovation, creating a soundscape capable of reconnecting longtime listeners while attracting a new audience.
“It’s music that feels familiar but also introduces something new and exciting,” he said.
On dream collaborations, Tunde expressed admiration for artists who prioritize emotional storytelling and songwriting excellence, mentioning John Legend and Burna Boy as artists he would love to work with.
At the heart of his artistry, however, remains a simple but enduring mission.
“I want my music to pass across hope, love, and authenticity,” he said. “I want people to feel encouraged and understood when they hear my songs.”
For Tunde Styl-Plus, success is no longer measured solely by charts or commercial milestones, but by lmpact, honesty, and artistic purpose.
“Success is creating meaningful music, stating true to who I am, and positively impacting people’s lives,” he concluded.
