The African Action Congress (AAC) has accused Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde of diverting state resources to fund his political ambitions ahead of the 2027 general elections.
The party accused the governor of spending state funds on political activities, including the Peoples Democratic Party convention in Ibadan, the APM convention, his presidential declaration and the establishment of a new campaign headquarters in Abuja.
In a statement on Tuesday by the party’s state chairman, Kayode Babayomi, urged the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) to investigate the state government’s spending.
“Makinde knows that the people of Oyo State will definitely reject his puppet, Adekanmbi. He is doing everything possible to spend what belongs to the people of Oyo State recklessly.
“We call on the EFCC and the ICPC to take a critical look into the spending of state funds and hold everyone involved accountable. State funds belong to all the people of Oyo State, not to Makinde or his political career,” he said.
Mr Babayomi said the people of Oyo State would reject Mr Makinde in 2027 and elect his party which he described as the only pro-people party.
He stated that the party would not allow the governor to launder or spend the state’s resources before he leaves Agodi.
“Reckless spending of the state’s resources will be resisted by the people, both on the streets and at the ballot box,” he said.
Mr Babayomi noted that his party would end financial instability and reckless spending in the state.
“We shall ensure that people like Makinde, who choose to spend the state’s resources recklessly, are held accountable and brought to justice,” he said.
The special adviser on media to Mr Makinde, Sulaimon Olanrewaju, did not respond to calls to his mobile.
He had also yet to respond to text messages sent to his phone as of the time this report was filed.
