Argentina has designated July 15 as its National Football Teams Day following the national team’s dramatic 2-1 victory over England in the semi-final of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The Argentina Football Association (AFA) announced the decision in a statement on Wednesday, saying the date was chosen to commemorate the memorable victory and honour the country’s national football teams.
According to the association, the celebration goes beyond the senior men’s team, as it is intended to recognise the achievements and contributions of all Argentine national teams.
Argentina’s semi-final clash with England had initially gone in favour of the Three Lions after Anthony Gordon put them ahead in the 55th minute following an assist from Morgan Rogers.
The Albiceleste, however, responded through Enzo Fernández, who converted a chance created by Lionel Messi to bring Argentina level.
The South Americans completed the comeback deep into stoppage time when substitute Lautaro Martínez finished another Messi-assisted move to secure a 2-1 victory.
The result sent Lionel Scaloni’s side into their second consecutive World Cup final and sparked widespread celebrations across Argentina.
In explaining the decision, the AFA said the date was selected to honour the historic triumph over England while also paying tribute to every national team representing the country.
The association described the victory as a moment that united Argentines in celebration and said the new national observance would serve as a broader recognition of Argentina’s footballing achievements.
