Former media aide to ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, Bashir Ahmad, has rejected claims that he secured only 16 votes during the All Progressives Congress (APC) House of Representatives primary election in 2022.
Ahmad’s response followed a social media exchange with Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, who mocked him during a political argument over the forthcoming Osun State governorship election.
Davido had on Thursday hit back at Ahmad after the former presidential aide predicted that his uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke, would lose the August 15 governorship election in Osun State.
“You got 16 votes bro in primaries STFU!!” Davido wrote in response to Ahmad’s post on X.
However, Ahmad disputed the figure, insisting that the 2022 APC primary was not a credible election and that he was prevented from fairly competing for the party’s ticket.
He said although he was not prepared to disclose everything that happened during the primary, there was evidence to support his allegation that the process was manipulated against him.
“Since the conversation surrounding my participation in the 2022 House of Representatives primary election has resurfaced, though I am not yet ready to reveal, in detail, everything that transpired during that process, but I feel it is important to say this unequivocally: it is simply not true that I got 16 votes,” Ahmad said.
According to him, the issue was not about the number of votes he received because, in his view, no genuine primary election was conducted.
Ahmad maintained that if a transparent contest had taken place, he was confident of emerging victorious. He added that videos and other materials were available to substantiate his account of what happened.
He consequently described any figures being circulated by Davido, his supporters or other individuals as misleading, arguing that they did not represent the outcome of a legitimate and credible primary.
His comments have since triggered reactions from social media users, with some questioning his decision to challenge the credibility of an APC primary conducted while Buhari was president.
Automobile influencer @Sarkinmota_AMF asked Ahmad whether he was suggesting that the same party that produced Buhari as president had conducted an unfair and non-credible primary.
Another X user, @Joshuaelijahms5, said Ahmad’s remarks appeared to confirm the widespread perception that Nigeria’s electoral system was plagued by irregularities.
The controversy comes as political activities intensify ahead of the August 15 Osun State governorship election, with supporters of the major political camps engaging in increasingly heated exchanges online.
