The Inspector General of Police, Tunji Disu, has directed all police officers across the country to ensure they wear name tags on their uniforms at all times for easy identification.
He said the directive is aimed at promoting accountability and professionalism within the force, adding that only officers engaged in undercover operations are exempted.
Disu gave the order on Tuesday while addressing senior police officers, stressing that proper identification remains a key standard in policing.
“All police officers should have their name tags. All of us on the high table have our names displayed except those on undercover duty. That is our standard,” he said.
He noted that Commissioners of Police and other senior officers are already complying with the directive and urged all formations to enforce full compliance within their jurisdictions.
“All the Commissioners of Police are here, and that is why we called this meeting. We have a list of issues to discuss with them. We have already told them earlier and will continue to remind them that everything happening within their area of responsibility is under their control,” he added.
The police chief also spoke on the proposed creation of state police, stating that the Nigeria Police Force has already submitted its position to the National Assembly.
“Since we received the indication that the Federal Government intends to establish state police, we decided to take the initiative and present our position on how it should be structured and operated,” he said.
The directive is expected to strengthen public trust in law enforcement and improve officer identification during operations across the country.
