A former Kano State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has formally resigned from the party, citing the need for a strategic political realignment.
In a press statement issued March 29, Mr Kwankwaso announced that his resignation takes immediate effect, bringing an end to his role as the party’s National Leader.
The former governor described his decision as a difficult one, noting that he was deeply honoured to have served as the NNPP’s presidential candidate in the 2023 general elections.
“Considering the current trajectory of the nation’s political landscape, which calls for strategic realignment, I have found it necessary to identify with another political platform that offers the best opportunity to effectively change the nation,” he said.
Mr Kwankwaso expressed gratitude to the party’s leadership, including the National Chairman, Ajuji Ahmed, and members of the National Working Committee for their support during his time in the party.
He also acknowledged the contributions of the Board of Trustees, the National Executive Committee, and party leaders at all levels, as well as supporters of the Kwankwasiyya Movement.
Despite his exit, Mr Kwankwaso stressed the need for continued collaboration among political actors to achieve national development.
“We shall continue to collaborate and work together towards charting a better and more prosperous future for our dear nation,” he added.
Mr Kwankwaso’s resignation is expected to trigger fresh political calculations ahead of future elections, particularly given his influence in Kano State and the wider northern political landscape.
