The Kano State Consumer Protection Council (KSCPC) has arrested some traders for allegedly altering the expiry dates of expired milk products.

‎‎The arrest was made in collaboration with the leadership of Singer Market over an attempt to resell the products to unsuspecting consumers.

‎‎The director in charge of enforcement operations, Auwalu Muhammad, disclosed this in a statement signed by the council’s spokesperson, Jamilu Mustapha, on Monday.

‎‎Mr Muhammad said that following the development, the council had no option but to seal the shops allegedly involved in the activity.

‎‎“We received a distress call this morning from the vice-chairman of Singer Market Traders’ Association, Aminu Umar-Dogara, about the activities going on in the market.

‎‎“The council immediately deployed its enforcement officers to the market following the report, which led to the apprehension of suspected traders and sealing of the affected shops.

‎‎“We are committed to protecting consumers against the sale of expired, adulterated and substandard products, as well as unlawful alteration of product labels, expiry dates and quality standards,” he said.

‎‎Earlier, the council’s executive secretary, Ibrahim Garba-Muhammad, said the council would not tolerate practices that violate consumers’ rights and endanger public health.

‎‎He warned that anyone found engaging in such unlawful activities would be prosecuted under the law.

‎‎The executive secretary commended the leadership of Singer Market Traders’ Association for its cooperation and support in the council’s efforts to rid markets of adulterated, expired and substandard products.

‎‎Mr Garba-Muhammad said sustained collaboration between the council and market associations is essential to protecting consumers and safeguarding public health.
