The Nigeria Revenue Service has reported a sharp rise in federal tax collections during the first half of the year, highlighting the impact of ongoing tax reforms, improved compliance measures and expanded digital administration.

According to official economic data released by the Presidency, tax collections through the Nigeria Revenue Service reached approximately N21.6 trillion during the first six months of the year.

Official figures show that federal tax revenue increased from about N14.27 trillion recorded during the first half of the previous year to approximately N21.6 trillion during the same period this year.

The increase represents an additional N7.33 trillion in collections, representing an increase of more than 50 percent compared with the corresponding period of the previous year. Government officials described it as one of the strongest half-year performances recorded by the country’s tax administration in recent years.

Government officials attribute the improved performance to “a combination of tax reforms, stronger enforcement, digital transformation and enhanced monitoring of revenue-generating sectors.”

The latest figures also suggest that non-oil revenue continues to play “an increasingly important role in supporting government finances,” reinforcing efforts to diversify national income beyond oil.

Tax Reforms Drive Higher Collections
Several reforms introduced in recent years have focused on simplifying tax administration while encouraging greater compliance among businesses and individuals.

Authorities have expanded the use of digital platforms to improve tax filing, payment processing and revenue monitoring. “These systems reduce manual processes, improve accuracy and make it easier for taxpayers to meet their obligations,” officials noted.

Officials also point to stronger oversight of oil-related remittances and improvements in revenue administration as key contributors to the increase in collections. The government’s broader fiscal strategy seeks “to reduce dependence on crude oil earnings by strengthening internally generated revenue through more efficient tax administration.”

Digital Administration Supports Compliance
Technology continues to play a central role in the Nigeria Revenue Service’s modernization programme. Electronic tax services now allow many taxpayers to complete registrations, submit returns and make payments online.

Digital monitoring tools also help tax authorities identify compliance gaps and improve enforcement. Experts note that digital tax administration “reduces processing time, limits opportunities for revenue leakages and creates a more transparent system for both taxpayers and regulators.”

Electronic Invoicing Rollout Gains Momentum
The Nigeria Revenue Service has also intensified implementation of its electronic invoicing programme for large taxpayers. Eligible companies have been directed to complete migration to the agency’s digital invoicing platform before the regulatory deadline.

According to the agency, compliance monitoring has already commenced, while organisations that fail to meet regulatory requirements may face enforcement measures provided under existing tax laws. Electronic invoicing is expected to “improve transparency across commercial transactions while supporting more accurate tax assessments.”

Corporate Compliance and Oil Industry Review
Alongside tax reforms, the Corporate Affairs Commission recently announced plans to remove thousands of inactive companies from its register if they fail to regularise statutory filings. Authorities believe stronger corporate reporting standards “will also improve the accuracy of tax administration and business records nationwide.”

The Federal Government has equally initiated a review of taxes, levies and statutory charges within Nigeria’s oil and gas industry. Government officials say consultants have been engaged to compare Nigeria’s fiscal framework with those of other petroleum-producing countries. “The objective is to identify opportunities to simplify the tax structure while maintaining government revenue.”

Economic Significance
Higher tax collections provide governments with greater fiscal capacity to finance development programmes without relying excessively on borrowing. Improved revenue generation supports investments in transportation infrastructure, healthcare facilities, education systems, security operations and social intervention programmes.

Economists also note that stronger domestic revenue “reduces vulnerability to fluctuations in global commodity prices, particularly crude oil.”

Outlook
Revenue experts expect Nigeria Revenue Service to continue strengthening digital tax administration as reforms mature. Future improvements are likely to focus on “expanding electronic services, improving taxpayer education, strengthening compliance monitoring and increasing collaboration with businesses.”

If current reforms continue successfully, analysts believe Nigeria “could sustain stronger non-oil revenue growth while creating a more transparent, technology-enabled tax system that supports economic stability and long-term national development.”
