Ankara – Nigerien President Abdourahamane Tiani is in Türkiye this week on a working visit focused on deepening cooperation between Niamey and Ankara.

According to TRT Afrika, “Nigerien President Abdourahamane Tiani is in Türkiye on a working visit with strengthening bilateral relations between the two countries topping his agenda.” The trip comes as Niger seeks new economic and security partners following strained relations with several Western countries and ECOWAS.

President Tiani’s itinerary is expected to include talks on defense cooperation, trade, and infrastructure development. Türkiye has expanded its presence in the Sahel in recent years, supplying drones and military training to several regional states while also investing in construction, energy, and agriculture.

For Niger, which is under military rule, the visit signals a push to diversify diplomatic partnerships. Analysts say Ankara’s role as a non-Western power with growing influence in Africa makes it an attractive partner for Niamey as it navigates sanctions and security challenges from jihadist groups.

Both sides are expected to issue a joint statement at the end of the visit outlining new agreements. The visit underscores Ankara’s broader strategy to expand its footprint in West Africa through trade, security assistance, and development projects.
