The Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) has clarified that no fire outbreak occurred at Terminal 2 of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Ikeja, despite its earlier report suggesting there was a fire incident at the facility.
FAAN explained on Sunday that what triggered the alarm was the release of smoke from the terminal’s FM-200 fire suppression system.
The clarification was contained in a statement issued by the agency’s Director of Public Affairs and Consumer Protection, Henry Agbebire.
According to FAAN, preliminary investigations showed that there was no actual fire at the terminal, adding that the smoke noticed in the affected area came from the activation of the fire prevention system.
The agency said it was still investigating what caused the FM-200 system to discharge unexpectedly.
“Normal operations have since resumed at the terminal, while detailed investigations are ongoing to determine the exact cause of the incident,” FAAN stated.
The authority also expressed appreciation to passengers, airlines, airport users and other stakeholders for their cooperation, assuring the public of its continued commitment to maintaining safety and security across airport operations.
Earlier on Sunday, FAAN had announced that a fire incident occurred at the terminal before later clarifying that it was a smoke discharge from the fire suppression system rather than an actual fire.
