A violent attack by armed men has left one person dead in Kofai Amadu community, Takum Local Government Area of Taraba State, after gunmen stormed a busy market area on Thursday afternoon.
The Taraba State Police Command confirmed the incident, which occurred around 4:00 p.m. in a trading hub where farmers, traders, and residents were carrying out their daily activities.
According to eyewitness accounts, chaos erupted when gunshots were suddenly heard from a nearby bush close to the yam market. The unexpected shooting caused panic, forcing traders and farmers—some of whom had just returned from their farms—to flee in different directions for safety, bringing commercial activities to an abrupt halt.
In the confusion that followed, some residents reported seeing armed men moving around a nearby settlement located about two kilometres from the market. Shortly after, a young man was found lifeless with gunshot injuries. Community members then alerted security operatives, who later arrived at the scene.
Residents of the area have since appealed to security agencies to increase surveillance and ensure those behind the attack are apprehended.
Confirming the incident, the Police Public Relations Officer, Victor Mshelizah, said he was informed of an ambush on individuals who had returned to their homes in the crisis-affected community to recover personal belongings.
He further stated that the victims were allegedly attacked by armed men described as Fulani militia, adding that one person was shot and later confirmed dead by a medical doctor.
According to him, security operatives have since restored calm in the area, while investigations into the incident are ongoing.
