Spanish and French authorities have appealed to the European Union for emergency assistance as devastating wildfires, intensified by extreme heat and strong winds, continue to spread across both countries, forcing tens of thousands of residents and tourists to flee.
Spain on Friday declared a state of emergency for the first time since the fires erupted, while France ordered the evacuation of the Cap Ferret peninsula, a popular tourist destination along the Atlantic coast.
Reports indicate that two major wildfires have merged on the outskirts of Madrid, with officials warning that a third blaze could soon combine with them, worsening the crisis.
Describing the situation as unprecedented, Madrid regional president Isabel Díaz Ayuso said the region was facing its most severe wildfire disaster, driven by soaring temperatures and persistent winds that have made firefighting efforts increasingly difficult.
One evacuee, Enrique Martin, who sought refuge in Cebreros west of Madrid, recounted escaping his home moments before flames engulfed the area, saying a slight delay could have proved fatal.
In southwestern France, thick smoke blanketed the sky as emergency services deployed boats to evacuate residents and tourists. Authorities estimate that more than 63,000 people have been moved to safety.
Another resident, Yoan Urien, said he watched the fires approach from his home before police ordered an evacuation. He managed to find shelter with his pets but described the experience as deeply traumatic.
With emergency resources under immense pressure, both Spain and France have requested additional support from the European Union to strengthen ongoing firefighting operations.
Authorities have also ordered more than 19,000 residents in communities west of Madrid to leave their homes as over 2,000 firefighters, supported by 10 aircraft, continue efforts to contain the rapidly spreading inferno.
