Spain’s Transport Minister Óscar Puente has resigned, six days after two high-speed train collisions in Toledo province killed at least 68 and injured over 100.

‎‎Mr Puente announced his resignation in Congress when he appeared to speak about the deadly train crash that occurred last Wednesday.

“A transport minister in a country like Spain cannot remain in office after two accidents of this seriousness in less than a year,” Mr Puente said, referring to January’s train crash in Andalusia, southern Spain.

‎Last week, the Spanish government declared a three-day mourning period over the high-speed train collision.

‎‎Toledo’s train collision is the third rail disaster in Spain in 2026, following two high-speed train collisions near Adamuz in January and another in southern Spain’s Córdoba province, which killed over 40 people.

‎The death toll from last Wednesday’s crash is now close to that of the 2013 train crash at Santiago de Compostela in northwest Spain, in which about 80 people were killed.
