President Bola Tinubu has applauded Team Nigeria for its remarkable showing at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Scotland, after the country secured 24 medals at the international sporting event.
In a statement released on Tuesday in Abuja by his spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, the president praised the athletes for their commitment, resilience, discipline and determination throughout the competition.
Tinubu said Nigeria’s medal haul, comprising 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals, was a testament to the athletes’ dedication and hard work.
He noted that the experience gained from the games would help strengthen Nigeria’s prospects in future global competitions, while also encouraging young Nigerians to embrace discipline, dedication and patriotism.
The president commended the Nigeria Olympic Committee and the National Sports Commission for their efforts in supporting athletes and promoting sports development in the country.
He said every member of Team Nigeria represented the nation with honour, regardless of whether they won medals or delivered courageous performances.
“On behalf of the government and the people of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, I express profound appreciation to our athletes, coaches, technical officials, medical personnel, administrators, and all those whose dedication and sacrifice made Nigeria’s participation at the games possible,” Tinubu said.
He further assured that his administration would continue to invest in sports infrastructure, improve training facilities and create better opportunities for Nigerian athletes to compete successfully on the global stage.
Tinubu urged the athletes to remain focused and continue pursuing excellence in future competitions.
