President Bola Tinubu has launched a new initiative to train 5,000 young Nigerians as meter installers and technicians under the Presidential Metering Initiative, in a move aimed at tackling the country’s persistent electricity metering gap while creating employment opportunities.
The programme is expected to equip participants with technical skills required for the installation, maintenance and management of electricity meters across Nigeria, as the government steps up efforts to improve power sector efficiency and reduce estimated billing.
Officials say the initiative forms part of the administration’s broader strategy to strengthen the electricity value chain, expand access to reliable power services and empower young people with marketable skills capable of generating sustainable livelihoods.
The Presidential Metering Initiative is also expected to accelerate the rollout of prepaid meters nationwide, improve transparency in electricity billing and enhance revenue collection for power distribution companies.
