Governor Bassey Otu of Cross River State has expressed deep sorrow over the tragic road accident involving students and a staff member of the University of Cross River State, UNICROSS, describing the incident as a painful loss that has thrown the entire state into mourning.

In a statement issued on behalf of the government and people of Cross River State, the governor said the state received news of the accident with profound grief and anguish, noting that the tragedy had left an immeasurable void in the hearts of Cross Riverians.

Otu said the unfortunate incident claimed the lives of bright and promising young people whose futures were filled with hope and possibilities, as well as a dedicated staff member known for faithful service and sacrifice.

According to him, dreams that had been carefully nurtured were abruptly cut short, while families have been left devastated by an overwhelming sense of loss.

The governor described the deceased students as precious sons and daughters of Cross River whose lives embodied courage, leadership and promise, lamenting that their journeys ended too soon.

He sympathised with parents who, according to him, watched their children leave home with hope only for them never to return, adding that siblings, friends and colleagues have now been left with painful memories and deep sorrow.

Otu also acknowledged the emotional burden on the entire UNICROSS community, saying the institution has been enveloped in grief and silence following the tragic development.

While noting that words may not be enough to heal the wounds caused by the incident, the governor prayed for divine comfort and strength for grieving families and members of the university community.

He further extended prayers and support to survivors currently receiving treatment in hospital, assuring them of the solidarity of the state government and the people of Cross River.

“As a government, we bow in solemn mourning and stand in prayerful solidarity with those receiving medical care, trusting God for their full healing and restoration,” the governor stated.

Calling for unity and compassion, Otu stressed that the tragedy affects every part of the state, adding that Cross River stands together in grief, prayer and support for the bereaved families.

He maintained that the pain of the University of Cross River State community is shared by all Cross Riverians, assuring that the state would continue to honour the memories of the deceased while praying for the recovery of survivors. Tragedy: Gov Otu Says Cross River Mourns as One Family
