Sixty-one inmates at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Kurmawa, Kano State, have successfully memorised and recited the Holy Quran under the Nigerian Correctional Service’s rehabilitation and reformation initiative.
The achievement was announced on Monday in a statement by the Public Relations Officer of the Kano State Command of the Nigerian Correctional Service, CSC Musbahu K/Nassarawa.
According to the statement, the graduating group consists of 55 male inmates and six female inmates who completed the programme after months of religious instruction and dedicated study.
K/Nassarawa explained that many of the participants entered the correctional facility with limited or no ability to recite the Quran in full. However, through structured learning, discipline and commitment, they successfully memorised the Islamic holy book.
He noted that the programme forms part of the Service’s broader rehabilitation efforts aimed at improving inmates morally, spiritually and educationally, while preparing them for successful reintegration into society after serving their sentences.
To mark the milestone, the Nigerian Correctional Service, in partnership with the Chokali Humanitarian Foundation, presented the graduates with welfare items, including new clothing, mattresses, blankets and financial assistance.
The Controller of Corrections in Kano State, Ahmed Yusuf Lakpene, commended the Controller-General of Corrections, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, for sustaining policies that promote educational, vocational and moral development programmes in correctional centres across the country.
Lakpene said the initiatives were helping to equip inmates with the knowledge, values and life skills needed to become responsible and productive members of society upon their release.
The Officer-in-Charge of the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kurmawa, DCC Ibrahim Isah Rambo, also praised the Kano State Command and the Chokali Humanitarian Foundation for supporting the programme.
He described the Quran graduation as a reflection of the positive impact of collaboration in advancing the Service’s goal of comprehensive inmate rehabilitation.
The ceremony ended with special prayers offered by the Custodial Chaplain, DSC Mohammed Alkanawy, and the Chief Imam, Imam Nasiru Abdu, for the inmates, the Nigerian Correctional Service, the Kano State Command and the nation.
The District Head and Dan Ruwatan Kano, Ibrahim Ado Bayero, presented certificates to the 61 inmates in recognition of their successful completion of the Quran memorisation programme.
