Lagos LCDA Begins Reconstruction of Collapsed Culverts to Tackle Flooding

The Chairman of Bariga Local Council Development Area (LCDA), Omope Adedeji, has directed the immediate reconstruction of collapsed culverts identified as the major cause of persistent flooding in parts of the council.

‎Adedeji issued the directive on Saturday during the council’s monthly environmental sanitation exercise, where she led officials on an inspection of several communities to assess environmental conditions and flood-prone locations.

‎Areas visited during the exercise included Orimogunje, Opeloyeru, Adeleke, Ososa Avenue, Ososa Lane, Ifelodun Junction, Toluwalase, Ikija, Seriki and Odunsi streets.
‎
‎During an inspection of the Ekimogun/Adetoke axis, the council chairman observed that a damaged culvert was responsible for repeated flooding in the area. She subsequently instructed the council’s Supervisor for Works and its engineering team to commence plans for the reconstruction project to provide a permanent solution.
‎
‎Adedeji said the initiative reflected her administration’s determination to maintain a cleaner, healthier and flood-free Bariga, stressing that environmental sanitation remained a top priority of the council.
‎
‎She also directed sanitary officers to intensify refuse evacuation and desilting of drainage channels in affected communities to improve the flow of stormwater and minimise future flooding.
‎
‎The chairman assured residents that all identified environmental challenges would receive prompt attention, adding that issues affecting public health and safety would not be overlooked.
‎
‎She further appealed to residents to support the council’s efforts by disposing of waste responsibly and refraining from dumping refuse into drainage channels.
‎
‎Adedeji, accompanied by the Vice Chairman, Babatunde Adesida, personally participated in clearing refuse at Ifelodun Junction and Ososa Lane while encouraging residents to take part in the sanitation exercise.

‎The exercise was attended by members of the legislative arm led by the House Leader, Wasiu Balogun, councillors, executive council members, management staff and officials of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) in Bariga.
‎
‎Speaking after the exercise, the Bariga NURTW Chairman, Dayo Odutola, popularly known as Olomu, pledged the union’s continued support for the council’s environmental sanitation initiatives.
