Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) has expressed concern over reported conviction and imprisonment of Christian woman identified in circulating reports as Lami Samuel Dawa, in Borno.
CAN said this in a statement by its President, Archbishop Daniel Okoh, on Saturday in Abuja.
Okoh said the association is particularly concerned by reports that the case arose from circumstances involving conversion of adult woman to Christianity, although precise facts and legal basis of conviction are still being verified.
He said the appeal has been filed and CAN is committed to allowing judicial process to run its course.
“Nevertheless, the case raises important questions about protection of religious freedom and fundamental rights guaranteed under Constitution of Federal Republic of Nigeria.
“The association believes that every individual has right to freely choose, change or practise their religion or belief without coercion, intimidation or unlawful punishment.
“CAN therefore calls on relevant authorities to ensure that rights of all parties are protected and that justice is served in accordance with Constitution and law,” he said.
Okoh said the association will continue to monitor developments and engage with relevant authorities through appropriate legal and institutional channels.
He said CAN remains committed to peaceful coexistence of Nigerians of all religious backgrounds and to protection of fundamental rights and freedoms of every citizen.
