Nigeria’s state governors have renewed their support for the creation of state police and ongoing reforms aimed at improving electricity supply across the country.
The position was contained in a communiqué issued after the second meeting of the Nigerian State Governors’ Forum held on Wednesday, where governors discussed key national issues affecting governance, security, and economic development.
According to the communiqué, the governors reviewed ongoing consultations with state Attorneys-General on proposed constitutional amendments, particularly those relating to the establishment of state police.
They stressed that any framework for state policing must be firmly rooted in the Constitution, uphold citizens’ rights, and reflect the principles of federalism. The governors added that the consultations would help develop a unified position among states on the matter.
Beyond security, the forum also considered progress on the National Nutrition 774 (N-774) Initiative following a presentation by the Federal Ministry of Budget and Economic Planning.
The governors reiterated their commitment to tackling malnutrition and improving nutrition indicators nationwide, especially among children. They also acknowledged efforts to advance the National Nutrition Bill and encouraged broader stakeholder engagement to strengthen policies and legal structures guiding nutrition programmes.
The meeting further received updates from the World Bank on its proposed Country Partnership Framework for Nigeria covering the 2026–2032 fiscal period, as well as the planned Sustainable Agricultural Value-Chains for Growth (AGROW) Programme.
Governors welcomed continued collaboration with the Federal Government, development partners, and other stakeholders to ensure the success of the agricultural initiative, which is expected to boost productivity, strengthen value chains, enhance food security, and attract greater private-sector participation.
They also endorsed targeted interventions for individual states and called for stronger coordination across sectors including healthcare, education, nutrition, water and sanitation, social welfare, and family development.
On energy, the forum reviewed the National Solar Super-Grid initiative, a large-scale renewable energy project designed to expand electricity access through decentralised solar generation linked to a national transmission network.
Governors noted that the project could significantly improve energy security, support industrial growth, deepen state electricity markets, and stimulate economic expansion.
The forum concluded by reaffirming its commitment to ongoing power sector reforms and closer cooperation among stakeholders to ensure Nigerians have access to reliable and affordable electricity.
