The National Hajj Commission of Nigeria (NAHCON) and Ahmadu Bello University (ABU), Zaria, have taken a historic step towards transforming pilgrimage administration with the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a specialised Master of Business Administration (MBA) in Hajj Operations Management.
The landmark agreement, signed on Friday at NAHCON headquarters in Abuja, marks what stakeholders describe as a decisive move to professionalise Hajj and Umrah management in Nigeria by replacing ad hoc operational practices with structured academic training and industry-based expertise. The initiative is also being hailed as one of the major reform gains under the leadership of the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NAHCON, Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, whose administration has prioritised institutional reforms, capacity building and improved service delivery across Nigeria’s Hajj ecosystem.
Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf, who signed the agreement alongside the Commission’s Secretary, Dr. Mustapha Muhammad Ali, said the complexity of modern Hajj operations demands a new generation of highly trained professionals capable of managing logistics, policy, technology, pilgrim welfare and international coordination.
“Hajj operations have become increasingly sophisticated. This programme will produce professionals equipped with both academic knowledge and practical field experience to improve planning, coordination and service delivery for Nigerian pilgrims,” he said.
On behalf of Ahmadu Bello University, Vice-Chancellor Professor Adamu Ahmed and Registrar Malam Rabiu Samaila formalised the partnership.
Professor Ahmed described the initiative as the culmination of almost a decade of consultations between both institutions, noting that the programme bridges the gap between academic excellence and industry practice.
According to him, graduates of the MBA will possess the managerial competencies required to respond to the evolving demands of Hajj and Umrah administration, not only in Nigeria but across the global pilgrimage ecosystem.
The programme is a collaborative initiative between the Hajj Institute of Nigeria (HIN) and the ABU Distance Learning Centre, making it accessible to participants across the country through flexible learning arrangements.
It is designed for officials of NAHCON, State Pilgrims’ Welfare Boards and Commissions, licensed Hajj and Umrah tour operators, professionals in travel, tourism and hospitality, religious scholars, entrepreneurs, and graduates seeking careers in pilgrimage management.
The Vice-Chancellor led a high-powered delegation that included Professor Mohammed Bashir Mu’azu, Director of the ABU Distance Learning Centre; Professor Sanusi Aliyu Rafindadi, Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Advancement, Research and Innovation); Professor Auwalu Haruna, Director of the CBN Centre for Economics and Finance, alongside other senior academics.
NAHCON’s delegation included the Rector of the Hajj Institute of Nigeria, Professor Nasiru Maiturare, directors and other members of the Commission’s senior management.
The initiative comes at a time when Nigeria is pursuing broader reforms in Hajj administration aimed at improving efficiency, accountability and service quality. The establishment of the MBA programme reinforces Ambassador Ismail Abba Yusuf’s vision of institutionalising excellence in pilgrimage management by creating a sustainable pipeline of professionally trained personnel for the sector. Analysts believe the programme represents one of the Chairman’s most enduring reforms, embedding capacity development into the architecture of Nigeria’s Hajj administration and positioning the country as a regional and global centre for Hajj education, training and research.
Admission requirements, application procedures and the commencement date for the programme will be announced by Ahmadu Bello University in the coming weeks.
