The Nigerian Exchange (NGX) extended its positive run during the trading week, with investors recording a combined gain of N2.532 trillion as the equities market closed on a stronger note.
According to the NGX weekly market report, the All-Share Index (ASI) climbed by 1.60 per cent, rising from 243,462.13 points in the previous week to 247,357.40 points.
The market capitalisation also appreciated by 1.61 per cent, increasing from N157.057 trillion to N159.588 trillion, reflecting the N2.532 trillion increase in investors’ wealth.
Sectoral performance was largely upbeat, with most indices ending the week higher. However, the Consumer Goods, Lotus II, Growth, Sovereign Bond, and Commodity indices recorded declines of 3.76 per cent, 1.55 per cent, 20.24 per cent, 0.14 per cent, and 1.25 per cent, respectively.
Trading activity improved significantly during the week as investors exchanged 4.433 billion shares valued at N306.143 billion in 255,589 deals. This surpassed the previous week’s turnover of 2.819 billion shares worth N182.499 billion traded in 226,729 deals.
The Financial Services sector dominated market activity with 3.422 billion shares valued at N207.206 billion traded across 117,545 transactions. The sector accounted for 77.18 per cent of total trading volume and 67.68 per cent of total market value.
The Consumer Goods industry ranked second with 201.978 million shares worth N17.171 billion traded in 28,666 deals, while the Information and Communication Technology (ICT) sector recorded 169.481 million shares valued at N21.194 billion in 23,107 transactions.
Three banking stocks—First HoldCo Plc, Access Holdings Plc, and Guaranty Trust Holding Company Plc—emerged as the most actively traded equities. Together, they accounted for 2.151 billion shares worth N170.793 billion exchanged in 44,768 deals, representing 48.51 per cent of total market volume and 55.79 per cent of total market value.
Market sentiment remained positive, with 57 stocks posting price gains during the week, an improvement from 44 in the previous week. Meanwhile, 38 equities recorded losses compared to 35 a week earlier, while 51 stocks closed unchanged, down from 67 previously.
Among the week’s strongest performers were UPDC Real Estate Investment Trust, First HoldCo Plc, Unilever Nigeria Plc, Cadbury Nigeria Plc, and AXA Mansard Insurance Plc, which gained N3.55, N24.55, N23.95, N10.50, and N2, respectively.
On the downside, Mecure Industries Plc, Royal Exchange Plc, Tripple Gee and Company Plc, SUNU Assurances Nigeria Plc, and BUA Foods Plc recorded the biggest losses, shedding N23.05, 19 kobo, 48 kobo, 40 kobo, and N93.90, respectively.
Meanwhile, the NGX announced the suspension of trading in the shares of Aluminium Extrusion Plc from July 22 after the company failed to submit its audited financial statements for the financial year ended December 31, 2025.
The Exchange also disclosed that 12.32 billion additional ordinary shares of 50 kobo each issued by Linkage Assurance Plc were admitted to its Daily Official List on July 23.
