China-Africa Trade Climbs to $197bn as Zero-Tariff Policy Drives African Exports

‎Trade between China and African countries rose to a record $197 billion in the first six months of 2026, reflecting stronger economic ties between Beijing and the continent.

‎The January-to-June figure represents the highest level of China-Africa trade recorded during the first half of a year, with increased access to the Chinese market contributing significantly to the growth.
‎
‎A report by TV BRICS said the expansion was partly driven by China’s decision to grant zero-tariff access to products from African countries that maintain diplomatic relations with Beijing.
‎
‎The policy began taking effect in May, and its impact was quickly reflected in trade figures. Chinese imports from Africa rose by 23.5 per cent year-on-year during May and June, according to China’s Foreign Ministry.
‎
‎The new trade arrangement has opened greater opportunities for African exporters of products including coffee, cashew nuts, dried chillies and some seafood items. It has also allowed producers from a broader number of African countries to gain access to Chinese consumers.
‎
‎China’s exports to Africa have similarly remained important to the continent’s industrial growth. About 75 per cent of Chinese goods shipped to African markets are capital and intermediate products, including machinery, industrial equipment, components and materials required for manufacturing and agricultural activities.
‎
‎Chinese authorities said the expanding trade relationship benefits both sides and pledged to maintain efforts to open the country’s market despite ongoing pressures in the global economy.
‎
‎Beyond merchandise trade, China and African countries are also strengthening cooperation in areas linked to economic resilience and sustainable development. Growing investment and trade flows have increased the need to secure supply chains, transportation networks and major economic infrastructure.
‎
‎Beijing’s engagement with African countries has also expanded to include technical assistance, professional training and institutional capacity-building as both sides seek to deepen practical economic cooperation.
