Afrobeats star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, has called on Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, to ensure that the August 15 Osun State governorship election is conducted peacefully and credibly.
Uzodimma was recently appointed by the All Progressives Congress (APC) to lead its National Campaign Council for the election. Davido’s uncle, Governor Ademola Adeleke of Osun, is seeking another term in office on the platform of the Accord Party, while the singer is serving as the head of youth mobilisation for his campaign.
Speaking during a press conference, Davido appealed to Uzodimma to use his position and influence to ensure that voters in Osun are allowed to freely choose their preferred candidate without intimidation or violence.
The singer said he was particularly motivated to make the appeal because of his family ties to Imo State, where his wife, Chioma, comes from.
“I appeal to you with respect, sir. I have heard reports suggesting that there could be attempts to interfere with the electoral process. While I cannot confirm these claims, I urge you to use your influence to ensure that the people of Osun are allowed to freely elect their preferred candidate,” Davido said.
He stressed that no political contest or ambition should result in the loss of lives, urging politicians and their supporters to prioritise peace before, during and after the election.
Davido also called on all stakeholders to respect the democratic process and avoid actions capable of threatening the safety of residents or undermining the credibility of the election.
