Alhaji Bamanga Tukur, the first civilian governor of the defunct Gongola State and former National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has died.
Tukur died on Saturday after a brief illness, according to a statement by the Adamawa State Government.
His death has drawn tributes from political leaders, with Adamawa State Governor, Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri, describing the late elder statesman as a “colossus” who made significant contributions to the development of Adamawa State and Nigeria.
Fintiri, in a condolence message issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Humwashi Wonosikou, said Tukur’s courage, foresight, patriotism and commitment to public service earned him a place of honour in Nigeria’s history.
The governor said he would personally miss Tukur’s wise counsel and extensive experience on matters concerning the state and the country.
“Alhaji Bamanga Tukur was a colossus who made remarkable contributions to the development of Adamawa State and Nigeria. His wealth of experience, wisdom and commitment to public service earned him a place of honour in our national history,” Fintiri said.
He extended his condolences to Tukur’s immediate family, friends and associates, as well as the people of Adamawa State.
Fintiri also declared three days of mourning across the state in honour of the former governor, directing that government flags be flown at half-mast during the period.
He prayed to Almighty Allah to forgive Tukur’s shortcomings, grant him Aljannah Firdaus and give his family and loved ones the fortitude to bear his death.
