The Inspector General of Police, Olatunji Disu, has initiated plans to establish a new campus of the Nigeria Police Academy in Ogun State and upgrade 42 police colleges across the country as part of efforts to strengthen police education and professionalism.

The initiative formed the focus of a strategic meeting held on Monday between the police leadership and officials of the Federal Ministry of Education.

According to a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, Anthony Placid, the meeting was attended by the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, the Minister of State for Education, Suwaiba Ahmad, and other stakeholders.

Placid said the discussions centred on the establishment of the proposed Ogun State campus and the accreditation of police colleges nationwide.

“The main goal of the meeting was to officially establish a new Nigeria Police Academy campus in Ogun State, along with a comprehensive plan to upgrade and secure accreditation for the 42 police colleges nationwide,” he stated.

A former Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, also participated in the meeting.

The police spokesman disclosed that the initiative would involve collaboration with the Tertiary Education Trust Fund to improve infrastructure, while the National Universities Commission would oversee resource verification and accreditation processes.

“Stakeholders also coordinated with the National Universities Commission for thorough resource verification to meet accreditation standards, with a clear timeline set for the Ogun State campus to be fully operational in the 2026 academic session,” Placid added.

Speaking on the broader objective of the reform, Disu stressed the need for a modern and service oriented police force equipped to tackle emerging security challenges.

“Transforming these institutions is essential for building a modern, service oriented police force,” the IGP said.

He added that the integration of academic excellence with operational training would strengthen the capacity of officers across the country.

“By combining academic rigour with tactical operational training, the Nigeria Police Force will produce officers ready to address today’s security challenges with the highest level of integrity,” Disu stated.
