The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that all 22 registered political parties successfully submitted their membership registers in compliance with the Electoral Act 2026, meeting the extended deadline by two days.
The submission deadline, initially set for April 21 under the Commission’s Revised Timetable for the 2027 General Election, was moved to May 10 following a meeting with party leaders on March 24. INEC formally announced the two-week extension on March 27, citing the need to align with parties’ proposed primary election schedules.
According to Section 77(4) of the Electoral Act 2026, party membership registers must be submitted to INEC at least 21 days before primaries. The adjustment allowed parties to conduct their primaries within the window of April 23 to May 30.
“All registered political parties complied with the requirement within the extended timeframe,” INEC stated. “The submitted registers will now be subjected to the necessary verification processes in line with the law.”
