Morris Monye, a political associate of Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, has alleged that the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) unlawfully replaced him as its candidate for the Delta State House of Assembly with a former member of the All Progressives Congress (APC).
In a post shared on X on Saturday, Monye claimed the party substituted his name with that of Uzoma Awunor, whom he described as an APC defector, despite his emergence in the party’s nomination process.
According to Monye, concerns over a possible substitution arose after influential APC figures defected to the NDC in Delta State. He said the reports prompted him to meet with Peter Obi late at night to explain the situation.
He alleged that those behind the decision claimed he had lost the party’s primary election to justify the replacement. Monye further claimed that the returning officer produced results in favour of another aspirant, adding that he initially believed due process had been followed before discovering otherwise.
Sharing a campaign poster of Awunor, Monye alleged that the party leadership intended to present him as the official candidate through what he described as an imposed arrangement backed by influential figures in Delta North.
Despite the development, Monye said consultations with Peter Obi and other political associates convinced him to move on. He added that he would remain committed to supporting the NDC’s presidential candidate while putting the controversy behind him.
