The Rotary Club of Abuja Federal District 9127 has appealed to the Federal Government to place greater emphasis on citizens’ welfare by enhancing primary healthcare delivery nationwide.
The club made the appeal on Saturday during a free medical outreach held at Piwoyi Community, along Airport Road, Abuja, in partnership with Silver Cross Hospital and Foundation.
Assistant Governor of the Rotary Club of Abuja Federal District 9127, Folashade Samuels, expressed concern over the state of the Piwoyi Primary Health Care (PHC) Centre, noting that more government support was needed despite previous renovation efforts by Rotary.
Samuels said the facility still required improved infrastructure, adequate medical supplies and a dependable power source to provide better maternal and child healthcare services.
She urged the government to increase its intervention and work with non-governmental organisations to address challenges affecting healthcare facilities.
According to her, while organisations such as Rotary contribute to improving communities, sustainable healthcare development requires stronger government involvement.
She also encouraged Nigerians to take their health seriously, describing good health as a key factor for personal and national productivity.
Similarly, the President of Rotary Club of Abuja Federal District 9127, Ismail-Adeleye Ibrahim, appealed for steady electricity supply at the Piwoyi PHC and other healthcare centres.
Ibrahim explained that the lack of electricity had made it difficult for patients to access basic laboratory services within the facility, forcing them to seek such services elsewhere at additional costs.
He said Rotary was considering providing alternative power solutions, including generators or solar energy, but stressed that government support remained necessary.
The club’s Community Service Director, Philip Osung, called on individuals and organisations to support initiatives aimed at improving healthcare access for vulnerable Nigerians.
He stated that the outreach was part of activities marking Rotary’s maternal and child health month and was organised in collaboration with Silver Cross Hospital and Foundation, as well as Rotaract members.
Osung noted that pregnant women registered at the health centre were among the major beneficiaries of the programme, which provides medical services, drugs and health assessments.
He added that the annual initiative was designed to promote healthier communities and contribute to national development.
“Healthy people are more productive, and this positively affects families and the country at large,” he said.
Meanwhile, Justina Paul, the district secretary on maternal and child health, urged government agencies to strengthen partnerships with charitable organisations and development groups to expand healthcare access for underserved communities.
She said stronger collaboration would help improve healthcare outcomes for vulnerable populations across Nigeria.
