Troops of the Nigerian Army have killed a suspected female informant linked to the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) and Jama’atu Ahlis Sunna Lidda’awati wal-Jihad (JAS) in Borno State, while arresting 14 other suspects involved in various criminal activities across the country.
The suspects arrested include alleged members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its armed wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN), suspected cultists, and a military deserter.
According to operational updates released on Saturday, the female suspect was detected through surveillance cameras while moving towards a military location from the Sambisa axis.
The report stated that troops of 222 Battalion, stationed at Forward Operating Base Kawuri in Konduga Local Government Area of Borno State, neutralised the suspect before she could breach the military defensive position.
Meanwhile, troops under Operation MESA arrested a soldier who reportedly deserted from the 13 Brigade during a checkpoint operation in Bwari Area Council of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).
The troops recovered a military uniform and a vehicle belonging to the deserter during the arrest.
The military also intercepted another vehicle suspected of transporting stolen armoured cables and detained the driver for further investigation.
In the South-East, troops of Operation UDO KA arrested five suspected IPOB/ESN members at Etuekwe Junction in Orsu Local Government Area of Imo State.
The suspects were reportedly apprehended at a secluded location believed to be a route used by members of the group.
In Enugu State, troops of the 82 Division Garrison and 103 Battalion, in collaboration with other security agencies, arrested eight suspected cult members at Eha-Amufu in Isi-Uzo Local Government Area.
The military said preliminary investigations linked the suspects to alleged terrorist activities around border communities between Enugu and Ebonyi states.
The suspects have since been handed over to the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The report added that troops involved in Operations Desert Sanity V, Fansan Yamma, and Savannah Shield recorded no major security incidents within their areas of operation during the period.
It also disclosed that officials of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) from its Maiduguri sub-delegation visited Sector 3 of Operation Hadin Kai/Multi-National Joint Task Force (MNJTF) at Kinnasara Cantonment in Monguno, Borno State.
The ICRC delegation briefed the sector commander on its humanitarian responsibilities, including promoting international humanitarian law and supporting communities affected by conflict in the Lake Chad Basin.
