Five people died on Sunday, and five more were injured after an Amazon cargo plane overran a runway at Miami International Airport, crashing into vehicles and disrupting air travel.
The Boeing 767-300 cargo aircraft took off from Puerto Rico and was to land at Miami-Dade when it overshot the runway and struck several nearby vehicles, leaving people fighting for their lives.
“What we found was a very complex situation,” Miami-Dade Fire Rescue Chief Raied Jadallah said at a press briefing on Sunday.
“We’re working closely with local authorities and officials to understand exactly what happened,” Kelly Nantel, an Amazon spokeswoman, wrote on X. She added that “our absolute priority is the safety, well-being, and care of everyone involved. We’re doing everything we can to support those affected.”
Federal Aviation Administration spokesperson Hannah Walden said that the runways at Miami International Airport lacked the Engineering Materials Arresting System, a facility designed to halt any aircraft that attempts to overrun a runway.
