Babcock University has presented Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu with its Leadership and Service Award in recognition of his contributions to governance and public service.
The honour was conferred on the governor during the university’s 2026 convocation ceremony held on Sunday in Ilisan-Remo, Ogun State.
Mr Sanwo-Olu, who also delivered the institution’s convocation lecture, addressed more than 3,400 graduating students, members of the academic community, parents and invited guests.
Responding to the award, the governor described leadership as a duty that demands integrity, accountability and selfless service. He said the recognition would inspire him to remain committed to serving the public.
”It is a humbling experience and another call for us to continue to serve. We must lead with the fear of God, understanding that people are watching us and that we are expected to provide good examples for younger generations,” he said.
In his lecture, Mr Sanwo-Olu encouraged the graduating students to embrace opportunities, believe in Nigeria’s potential and prepare themselves for success in a rapidly changing global environment.
He explained that his participation in the ceremony was not only to celebrate their achievements but also to inspire them as they embark on the next phase of their lives.
”As leaders, we must continue to encourage young people, share our experiences with them and let them know that life is waiting for them out there,” he said.
The governor commended Babcock University for maintaining high academic standards and producing graduates who have excelled in various professions and sectors of society.
He noted that the institution had consistently equipped students with the knowledge, skills and values needed to contribute meaningfully to national development.
Describing the graduating class as one of the largest in the university’s history, Mr Sanwo-Olu said it represented a new generation of Nigerians ready to take advantage of global opportunities.
He urged the graduates to approach the future with confidence, pointing out that today’s young people have greater access to knowledge, technology and opportunities than previous generations.
Reflecting on his own experience, he said the world had changed significantly since his graduation nearly four decades ago, with far more opportunities now available to young people.
He encouraged the graduates to embrace innovation, adapt to changing realities and maximise the benefits of technology and globalisation instead of dwelling on limitations.
According to him, Nigeria still offers vast opportunities for innovation, entrepreneurship and personal growth. He added that the education they received at Babcock University had prepared them to make meaningful contributions to their communities and the country.
Mr Sanwo-Olu congratulated the graduating students and urged them to uphold the values of excellence, discipline and integrity as they pursue their careers and life ambitions.
