The Edo State Government has ordered the indefinite closure of three secondary schools in Akoko-Edo Local Government Area following intelligence indicating a possible kidnapping plot targeting students.
The affected institutions are Ososo Grammar School, Ososo Comprehensive High School and Makeke Secondary School. The directive was issued through a circular dated June 9 and signed by the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education, Enodolomwanyi Otamere.
According to the ministry, security agencies alerted the government to credible threats against students, teachers and surrounding communities, prompting the precautionary shutdown.
Otamere stated that all academic and non-academic activities in the affected schools have been suspended to safeguard lives and property until the security situation improves.
The decision follows intelligence reportedly obtained by the Department of State Services, which suggested that suspected bandits were planning mass abductions of schoolchildren in Edo North Senatorial District. The report alleged that the criminals shifted their focus to schools after attempts to kidnap wealthy individuals failed to produce the expected financial gains.
The intelligence further revealed that a 25-year-old suspect was arrested on June 4 while allegedly conducting surveillance around Makeke Secondary School, heightening concerns that preparations for the planned attack had already begun.
In response, security agencies recommended stronger protection around schools, deployment of additional security personnel, increased patrols in vulnerable communities and closer collaboration with local vigilante groups and hunters.
Despite the closure, candidates participating in the ongoing West African Senior School Certificate Examination will still be allowed to sit for their papers under enhanced security arrangements coordinated by relevant agencies and community stakeholders.
The ministry also instructed school authorities to ensure students are safely handed over to their parents or guardians, secure school facilities and maintain close communication with government officials and security agencies.
The Edo State Government appealed to parents and residents to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies as efforts continue to address the threat and restore normal academic activities.
